During the fall 2010 semester, I will be studying abroad in Nicaragua. It is an experiential learning program where we will be learning about field research, improving our Spanish, living in homestays, and conducting independent research. We will learning about Nicaragua through the lens of 'Revolution, Transformation, and Civil Society.'

Los Ruidos de Mi Casa

Los Ruidos de Mi Casa or The Sounds of My House

Most houses in Nicaragua have metal roofs. When it rains, it is very noisy. My homestay mother, Doña Brenda, keeps reminding me of the sounds that I will hear. There are limes that fall with a plunk! There is also a cat that walks across the roof and disturbs the dog. My first night in my homestay I heard noises in the park. I later found out that it was fireworks because it was the anniversary of the police.

  1. Curious if the homes are close together where you are and if all the metal roofs together sound even louder.
